Aunt Sally, A Black Woman and Claim Owner, A Lady of Firsts
Sarah Campbell was one of the first non-Indian, non-white women to enter the hills working as a cook for George Custer's expedition in 1874. Aunt Sally, as she became affectionately known, was well respected and loved by both the troops and later the miners of Galena whom she cooked for.
Sarah Campbell was also the first woman to establish a mining claim August 5, 1874 with claim no 7 below Discovery in Custer's Gulch. Aunt Sally died in 1888.

Sep 15 1883
At about 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, Mrs. E.A. Holmquist, whose husband has been in the employ of Star and Bullock for some time, was sitting in her parlor conversing with a lady friend, when she was suddenly seized with a trembling, and fell over on the floor dead. She has been troubled for some time with heart disease, but there was no thought of her being in any serious danger. Her husband, E.A. Holmquist, is thus in a moment left alone in the world with three helpless children, in almost a strange land, but we can assure him of the sympathy of the people his little family has so recently come amongst. Funeral on Monday at 2 o'clock p.m.

J.B. Clark, alias Bucksin Bill, the man who died at Sturgis City, due mention of which was made in the Times, was buried in Potter??s Field, yesterday, by Coroner Smith. This man will be remembered as the party who assaulted Mrs. Lindenbower, was indicted by the grand jury, plead guilty, and served out his sentence, sixty days in the county jail, and a few days after his discharge again assaulted her, for which he received at the hands of unknown parties a wholesome castigation. He drifted off to Sturgis, where he was, as when here, a drunken, worthless nuisance, and not a soul who ever knew or heard of him felt any regret at his untimely taking off, and not a person outside of those whose duty it was to bury paupers, went near him or attended his funeral. His life was a miserable failure.
